Something blue…

This wedding invitation package is a wonderful example of the detail that can be achieved with letterpress.  This set was printed in 2 colors on Crane Lettra. The invitation design has a very art deco flair, perfect for the couple, as they got married at the Denver Botanic Gardens.  It was a perfect set for capturing details, as in the complex pattern  in the wings of the dragonfly and the fine lines of the flourishes.

Birds of a feather…

This is a wedding package we printed for Laura and John.  They wanted to keep it simple with a rustic flair.  This was a second marriage for the both of them and they wanted to symbolize their five children by putting five chicks in the nest on their invitation. We letterpressed the invitation and response card on thick 100% cotton letterpress paper  in chocolate brown to get a nice bite, foil stamped their return address on red envelopes, and letterpressed their logo on bags which held everything inside the outer envelopes.

Lovin’ between the sheets…

Recently our good friend Brian Allen came by to show us a little about impression printing.  We pulled together some of our local letterpress friends for a day of experimenting with paper layers, linoleum cuts, string and tape on our Vandercook press. All said and done it was a great day for print making!

The road less traveled.

Like Mr. Frost says… “and that has made all the difference,”  and oh it has. Designed by and for 3 Roads Media these cards, printed on Mohawk Renewal Cover, are double sided 3 color letterpress wonders.  The pattern wraps around the front and the back to create continual interest and kinetic movement.  Each card is a unique piece of art as the mottled pattern of the ink changes with every swipe of the roller over the die. We also custom die cut these cards with three-rounded corners, leaving one unscathed, to echo the geometric pattern of the print. A really great piece to have run and experimented with good ol’ ink on paper.

We kiss and tell…

Here at Foils & Dies we can’t help ourselves, we love to kiss and tell.  This is our own Pucker Up promotion.  Each set of lips indicates a different level of impression for letterpress printing.  We’ve found this is the perfect way to communicate letterpress when we can’t see a client in person. We printed the most recent run on a variety of shades from French Paper’s Pop Tone, on chip board, and Mohawk Renewal, using three press runs of white, black and red.

It was most recently featured by the wonderful people at Paper Specs on their blog. You can visit them here to request your own copy and read the article.

As always, XOXO

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”

Artist, William Matthews, contacted us to create this invitation for the opening of his gallery show “Simplicity.” In keeping with the tone and feel of his work, this invitation was printed on chipboard using letterpress and foil stamping in earth tones and capped off with a tip-on detail of one of his pieces. We made custom envelopes from a complimentary GMUND stock to fit the invitation’s unique size and letterpressed the gallery’s address on the back flap.

They don’t teach you this stuff in school…

We recently had a group of students from the Art Institute of Colorado visit Foils + Dies to get a “feel” for letterpress.  Professor Ed Popovitz and his digital pre-press class joined us in the studio for a lesson in what it’s like to take a project from concept to production.  We had a chance to show off some of our favorite projects and review a job we had on press.

Introducing students and designers to letterpress is always one of our favorite things to do, because we love what we do.  We hope they all enjoyed the experience and look forward to seeing some of their work run through the presses soon!

Not quite black and white…

Printed in rich black and warm gray on Crane’s Lettra, this invitation is the epitome of minimalist design.  Designed by Julie Morey, it’s elegant, simple, has a fine focus on clean bold typography and high contrast, and was the perfect fit for her client.

Flight of the bumble bees.

This wedding invitation was designed by our very own Maura at The Paper Guppy, who specializes in custom invitation package designs. This invitation includes special details to the bride and groom like sprigs of lavender, blooming fruit and vines, and bumble bees which were all special details about their special day.

This package was letterpressed in brown ink, the invitation on Crane’s Lettra and the pouch on Curious Metallics’s Gold Leaf. The invitation itself has a chocolate satin ribbon pull tab to help the recipient elegantly remove it from its custom pouch.

Giant Yucca, more than just a bunch of pricks.

This great little card was designed by Ben Gust for Joel Michon at Giant Yucca. It utilizes an unconventional design that makes it both intriguing and memorable. We letterpresssed these in green and black ink on Classic Crest’s 110# Solar White cover to achieve a nice impression, rich color, and bold contrast.

These folding cards reflect the multiple facets of Giant Yucca, a company comprised of creatives from all over, who have “sharp ideas” and passion for leading-edge design.
